Probably the most equitable basis for calculating rates is the actual area of the space to be cleaned. Many companies charge a set rate per square foot. This is calculated by measuring the length and width of the room and multiplying these two numbers together. Some companies have a set price per room. While they may not tell consumers this, their rates are also calculated based on a certain number of square feet representing the largest area they will clean for that price. Customers with smaller rooms will have to pay the full price even though they have less than this maximum area. Some with extra large rooms may be charged for two rooms even though the area to be cleaned is only one and half times the maximum per room area.

Some service providers prefer to come to the home and take their own measurements before preparing a quote. In many cases, this is best for the consumer. This is because the technician will see what furniture must be moved, any spaces within the room that are not carpeted, and other features that can affect the actual amount of area to be cleaned.

When these features are taken into account, the total price often drops from what it would have been if just the raw room area were used as the basis for the quote. Technicians can also identify high traffic areas and spots that will require pretreatment before the main cleaning can begin. This can affect the choice of chemicals that will be used and/or the process that will be used.

Comparing rates for carpet cleaning can be somewhat confusing for some. It is important to know how the company calculates their rates so that one can know whether the quoted price is comparable to the price quoted by another company. Straight calculations based on the number of square feet in the room are the easiest to compare. However, one might prefer to have a technician make an onsite evaluation and prepare a quote that is based on the exact area of carpet cleaning to be performed.
